Electrical machines

Overall Course Objectives

The primary objective of this course is to present and teach students about the function and design of electrical machines in terms of basic principles of theory of electromagnetism. Furthermore, the course focuses on means for analysis of electrical machine operation used in present and future energy system.

  • Magnetic materials and Magnetic circuits analysis
  • Three phase transformers and equivalent circuit analysis
  • Electromechanical energy conversion
  • Induction machine and equivalent circuit analysis
  • Experimental tests and measurements of electrical machine and use of data to identify equivalent circuit parameters
  • Synchronous machine and equivalent circuit and phasor diagram analysis
  • DC machine and equivalent circuit of DC analysis
  • participate in group work and work effectively as part of a team

o Magnetic Circuits
o Transformers,
o Energy conversion
o Induction Machines
o Synchronous Machines
o Direct Current (DC) machines,

  • 6 – 20 (Mon 13-17)

Recommended prerequisites

46700/62760, – Basics of electrical circuits, solving DC and AC circuits using Kirchhoff’s Laws using complex algebra.
– Knowledge of power systems and basic electromagnetism is advantage.
