Single-Course English 5 ECTS

Chemical Unit Operations Laboratory

Overall Course Objectives

To bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application in the realm of chemical unit operations used in the chemical, biochemical and pharmaceutical industry. By engaging in experiments conducted on semitechnical and technical scales, students gain valuable insights into the real-world applications of chemical processes. This hands-on approach not only showcases the possibilities and limitations of theoretical concepts but also enhances practical experience and deepens understanding.

Learning Objectives

  • Explain principles and main components of the unit operations.
  • Recognize technical components on real life plants.
  • Operate a pilot scale experimental setup, incl. data acquisition, control manipulation, and sampling.
  • Analyse results and apply theory on practical experimental problems.
  • Formulate conclusions concerning the quality of the experimental data and applicability of the theory; draw consequences for the process operation.

Course Content

Perform and report on 4 exercises within the following areas: Gas and liquid flow in pumps, pipes and fittings, flow through particle beds, flow of bulk solids, agitation and aeration, heat transmission, distillation, absorption, ion exchnage, extraction, filtration, membrane separation, centrifugation, drying, evaporation, crystallization, organic synthesis, high temperature technology and CIP processes.
The exercise reports will be assessed not only for the general presentation of theory and results but also for the students’ ability to apply the obtained data within a professional engineering, science, and technology context.

Recommended prerequisites

28020/28022/28025, Theoretical course in chemical unit operation/process technology is necessary in order to be able to complete the course.
Basic knowledge in inorganic, organic, analytical chemistry, physics, thermodynamics and matematics.

Teaching Method

For courses in the 13-weeks periods: Schedule by appointment. The appointments for all 4 Exercises need to be made at the beginning of the course.
In total 4 exercises including reports, carried out in groups of 2-3 persons.
