Basic Geotechnical Engineering
Overall Course Objectives
To enable the participants to a) describe and apply calculation methods for the solution of geotechnical problems in normal engineering practice, b) describe the most important design methods for problems such as retaining walls, shallow foundations, slopes and excavations.
Learning Objectives
- Describe the plastic failure state in soil for geotechnical constructions
- Calculate earth pressure on a wall based on Rankine and Brinch Hansen theory.
- Design a retaining wall based on information about load and material properties.
- Define and solve plane 2D stationary seepage problems in homogeneous soil
- Calculate earth pressure and water pressure on a wall taking account of seepage forces.
- Calculate the safety of slopes in clay and/or sand.
- Calculate the capacity of shallow foundations.
- Calculate the capacity of piles.
- Dimension foundations taking into account factors of safety
