Traffic and roads in urban areas
Overall Course Objectives
The aim of the course is to give the student a basic understanding of sustainable traffic planning as well as road technology concepts and techniques for the description and design of road traffic facilities in urban areas.

- Plan and perform road traffic registration
- Assess traffic flow
- Assess the environmental impact of traffic
- Analyze and plan traffic networks for bicycles in urban areas
- Analyze and plan traffic networks for cars in urban areas
- Analyze and assess traffic impacts of urban development and infrastructure projects
- Dimensioning traffic systems on a traffic engineering basis
- Plan and design signal regulation for road traffic
Course Content
This course assesses how to design road construction in urban areas based on different road users’ needs and behavior and taking into account the environment.
Traffic planning for
– cyclists
– cars (road classes, road types, accessibility, availability, road safety, insecurity, barriers)
Traffic, safety and environmental consequences of activities related to noise planning and noise reduction measures
Traffic driven dimensioning:
– Traffic flows, counts and analyses, delays and queues, capacity assessment of crossings
Signal Control:
– Function and security, geometry, equipment, signal programs, time management, coordination, traffic management.
