Business Intelligence
Overall Course Objectives
The increasing demand for information to create competitive advantages and optimize business processes has stimulated an increased use of Business Intelligence (BI), Analytics and Big Data. The goal of the course is to give students professional competences to identify information deliverables in a strategic context to innovate business processes, a basic understanding of the technology in use, and skills to develop a BI solution by using a spreadsheet (e.g. MS Excel) or other generally available BI-tool, e.g. Power BI or Tableau.

Learning Objectives
- Understand Business Intelligence as a holistic discipline with relationships from business strategy and source data.
- Have basic knowledge of strategy and business development.
- Explain the main elements in the process of a business requirements specification and business case methodology.
- Demonstrate basic knowledge of relational databases and their purposes.
- Explain typical architecture and IT infrastructure components in Business Intelligence solutions.
- Explain the purpose of the architectural components in a data warehouse, data marts and typical data creating source systems in the business’s immediate environment.
- Explain various analytical techniques that generate and deliver information for decision support and process improvement.
- Develop an information strategy based on a company strategy at the cooperate or department level and identify relevant information deliverables to improve upon processes or start new business processes.
- Identify and explain the most significant risk factors associated with information projects.
- Develop and explain the plan and requirements specification for a business intelligence project.
- Develop a Business Intelligence solution with Power BI, Tableau, Excel, or other BI tool, based on case material.
Course Content
The relationship between business strategies and use of information and maturity models.
Business requirement specification and business case.
How to create an information wheel and develop an information strategy.
Overview of Business Intelligence and typical risk factors (pitfalls).
Productions of information at the functional organizational level (lead and lag information).
The competences and role of the analyst and reporting system.
The main components of an information system.
The difference between data, information and knowledge.
Quantitative analytics, data mining and reporting.
Data warehouse, ETL, data marts.
The businesses acquisition of source data.
Business Intelligence Competence Center (BICC).
The BI software vendors and practical BI solutions.
Case based project work and presentation.
Developing your own BI solution by using Power BI, Tableau, Excel, or another BI tool.
Recommended prerequisites
It is recommended, but not required,that the students have a basic understanding of statistics, SQL and MS Excel.
Teaching Method
Lectures with discussions, learning tasks using own PC and casework in groups.
The primary language in the course is Danish however lectures in English kan occure.

Limited number of seats
Minimum: 10, Maximum: 70.
Please be aware that this course has a minimum requirement for the number of participants needed, in order for it to be held. If these requirements are not met, then the course will not be held. Furthermore, there is a limited number of seats available. If there are too many applicants, a pool will be created for the remainder of the qualified applicants, and they will be selected at random. You will be informed 8 days before the start of the course, whether you have been allocated a spot.
