Magnetism and Magnetic Materials
Overall Course Objectives
The aim of the course is to give the student a broad knowledge of magnetism and magnetic materials and related experimental techniques.
See course description in Danish
Learning Objectives
- Describe why materials have magnetic moments
- Describe why and how magnetic moments in materials interact
- Calculate the magnetic response of a magnetic material to an external magnetic field
- Describe and visualize the different types of magnetically ordered structures (ferro-, antiferro-, and ferrimagnets)
- Calculate the magnetic phase transition temperature in the mean field model
- Derive an expression for magnetic excitations (spin waves)
- Explain formation of magnetic domains and single-domain properties
- Explain the particular magnetic properties of nanoparticles
- Describe the principles in a series of magnetic measurement techniques: magnetometry, magnetic imaging, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), neutron scattering
