Single-Course English 5 ECTS

Magnetism and Magnetic Materials

Overall Course Objectives

The aim of the course is to give the student a broad knowledge of magnetism and magnetic materials and related experimental techniques.

Learning Objectives

  • Describe why materials have magnetic moments
  • Describe why and how magnetic moments in materials interact
  • Calculate the magnetic response of a magnetic material to an external magnetic field
  • Describe and visualize the different types of magnetically ordered structures (ferro-, antiferro-, and ferrimagnets)
  • Calculate the magnetic phase transition temperature in the mean field model
  • Derive an expression for magnetic excitations (spin waves)
  • Explain formation of magnetic domains and single-domain properties
  • Explain the particular magnetic properties of nanoparticles and thin films
  • Describe the principles in a series of magnetic measurement techniques: magnetometry, magnetic imaging, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), neutron scattering
