Advanced image and video coding

Overall Course Objectives

The aim is to introduce new trends in the areas of image and video coding and communication.

Learning Objectives

  • analyse image coding models
  • explain multi-resolution coding of images
  • explain advanced motion compensation and rate-control in video coding
  • explain interaction between communication networks and image and video coding
  • develop advanced image and video coding techniques
  • simulate image or video coding
  • apply new image and video coding methods, e.g. for multi camera video
  • optimize image and video coding methods
  • apply machine learning in image and video coding

Course Content

The topics covered are new methods for optimization of entropy coding, cross-entropy, machine learning in image coding, wavelet and multi-resolution coding of multi-dimensional image data, interplay between communication networks and image/video coding, advanced video coding, high video color quality, distributed coding, multi camera and multiview coding.

34240/34241, or knowledge of image or video coding
