General Chemistry
Overall Course Objectives
General chemistry is the basis for all other chemistry courses. The aim is therefore to give a basic knowledge of the principles of general chemistry and to apply these to chemical problems.
See course description in Danish
Learning Objectives
- name simple chemical compounds
- balance chemical reaction equations
- do simple stoichiometric calculations
- describe systematic changes of chemical and physical properties in the periodic table of elements
- write the electronic configuration of a given atom
- write acid-base, saturation and complex equilibriums in an aqueous solution
- write the Nernst equation for a electrochemical reaction
- calculate concentrations of all compounds in an aqueous solution and describe the necessary approximations
- calculate pH in solutions
- calculate reaction enthalpy based on enthalpy of formation
Course Content
Nomenclature of inorganic compounds, balancing of chemical equations and basic stoichiometry. The periodic table of the elements with emphasis upon regularities (atomic radius, ionic radius, ionization energy, electron affinity and electronegativity). Calculation of concentrations in aqueous solution, including acid-base, solubility, and complex-ion equilibria. Exo- and endothermal reactions. Enthalpy. Electrochemistry. Standard electrode potentials.
