Executive Master in Sustainable Leadership
Read about how Simon deepened his understanding of sustainability and transformed his leadership approach through DTU’s Executive Master in Sustainable Leadership – balancing complex concepts with practical impact in his daily work.
What was your professional background before joining the Executive Master in Sustainable Leadership programme?
I graduated as an Urban Geographer in 2007 and began my career in urban planning with the City of Copenhagen. For the past 11 years, I have been working with Realdania, a philanthropic association focused on the built environment.
Why did you decide to pursue the Executive Master in Sustainable Leadership at DTU?
In my daily work, I encounter many innovative ideas for supporting sustainable living, primarily from the AEC (architecture, engineering, and construction) sectors. Recognizing that the built environment is highly systemic and influenced by other sectors, I was drawn to the Executive Master in Sustainable Leadership programme. It offered a broader understanding of sustainability, allowing me to learn from solutions in other sectors and integrate them into the built environment.
The two-year master’s programme at DTU was particularly appealing due to its format: intense class sessions a few days per month, relevant readings, ongoing written submissions, and two world-class study tours to Iceland and India. The master’s thesis provided a unique opportunity to delve into complex topics and formulate actionable knowledge.
What surprised you the most during your studies?
One of the most surprising aspects of the programme was the opportunity to focus deeply on specific concepts.
I recall a session where a teacher started by saying, “This morning we will talk about power!” This level of focus and the chance to spend hours understanding and unfolding a single concept was a unique and valuable experience.
How has the programme influenced the way you lead today?
The concept of sustainability has become significantly more important to me since starting the programme. While it can be discouraging to see many aspects of society moving in the wrong direction, the knowledge gained is invaluable.
“My master’s thesis helped me discover important theories and develop results that I believe will make me more impactful in my daily work.”
