Wind Turbine Components – online course
Are you interested in exploring the essential parts of wind turbines that make them tick? Perfect for engineers eager to drive the future of renewable wind energy.
From the towering structures, the sophisticated nacelle and drivetrain, this course covers it all. You will gain insights into the design, materials, manufacturing processes, measurement, and digital tools used in the industry for these essential components and learn how to measure performance and understand the lifecycle of these powerful machines.
The course consists of 13 modules, covering:
- Introduction of wind turbine mechanical, electrical, and structural components
- Conceptual design and sizing
- Drivetrain topology, loads calculations
- Materials usage and recycling
- Tower design and manufacturing technologies
- Condition monitoring and sensing
- Life cycle analysis
This course is for everyone who is interested in wind energy.
What is in it for you?
Upon the completion of the course, you will be able to:
- Describe the function of major components and how they work together to produce electricity, including materials used and manufacturing technologies.
- Compare the different types of wind turbine drivetrains, including geared, medium-speed, and direct drive machines and understand the design tradeoffs.
- Describe different manufacturing technologies (welded and additive manufactured) for wind turbine towers (steel and concrete) and present pros and cons
- Explain the measurement and sensing technologies on various components with the focus on condition monitoring
- Summarize the maintenance and repair procedures for wind turbine components, including safety protocols and troubleshooting techniques.
- Use mathematical and engineering principles to design and size wind turbine components.
- Perform simple analysis on health monitoring data of selected components using turbine measurement data from public domaine
- Assess the environmental impact of turbine components throughout their entire life cycle, from the extraction of raw materials to manufacturing, transportation, installation, operation, maintenance, and finally, decommissioning and disposal.
