Innovation in Fisheries and Aquaculture

Overall Course Objectives

The objective of the course is for students to apply their knowledge on innovation processes in the field of aquaculture, fisheries, and biodiversity and conservation.

Through a series of introductory lectures, industry examples, and working group sessions students will identify innovation challenges and the requirements to resolve these, by drawing on their acquired expertise from the programme specific curriculum.

Ultimately students will design and develop a testable product or concept with the potential to be commercialized in order to increase the sustainability of current practices.

Learning Objectives

  • Analyze the need for a new technology, solution, or product within Fisheries and Aquaculture
  • Identify and describe an innovation challenge within their field and present the basic concepts to their peers
  • Interact with industry partners and academics in an innovation feedback process
  • Critically assess and evaluate existing technologies and solutions to a problem
  • Work iteratively to develop a functional prototype through testing, analysis, and development
  • Evaluate route to market and develop a strategy
  • Deliver a professional and clear video pitch that highlights the impact of the innovation
  • Produce a written report outlining the innovation process

Course Content

The course focuses on the innovation phase and processes in which students identify an area within fisheries, aquaculture or biodiversity which has an identifiable sustainability challenge.

The innovation must be realistic and implementable, and it should be possible to gauge its volume and effect. Students will use the design-build method in a problem-based engineering approach.

Students will interview experts in academia and industry in order to get feed-back on their innovation concept and will produce a recorded pitch to be assessed on its professionalism, clarity, feasibility, impact and desire to invest.

Researchers from the department will provide case studies on innovation in research while guest speakers from industry will provide context from the business angle. Ultimately, each group will produce a report outlining the innovation process.

The pitch and report must both be passed.

Recommended prerequisites

As many aquaculture and fisheries courses as possible, including biodiversity and management.
