ELPIS – Lead the Biorevolution across Life Science

Dr. Andreas Worberg, CCO Head of Section DTU Biosustain

Lead the biorevolution across life science – how convergence of technologies can transform your business

How to innovate and compete through technology in a sustainable future
We are in the midst of a paradigm shift – a transition toward a technology driven biobased and more sustainable society that is set to redefine how we live, what we produce and how we produce it – and consequently how we do business.

Technology is driving this development and is taking place across industries, professional disciplines and research fields. It is not the technologies on their own, but the convergence of them that will be a gamechanger by accelerating the pace of product development and innovating entire new products and services.

These technologies include life science and biotechnology, AI, quantum technology, advanced manufacturing and materials, advanced semiconductor technology, robot technology and autonomous systems, advanced sensorial technology, and cybersecurity.

From the way we produce food and make medicine to how we construct buildings, move goods, offer services and power our economies – everything is changing. And the companies that understand how to leverage these converging technologies across industries will be the ones that lead.

This course is designed to put you on the right side of that change
The 4-day in-person course at DTU will equip you with a clear understanding of how these technologies interact and empower each other – and how to use them to build a competitive, sustainable and future-fit business.

Importantly, you will also grow as a strategic leader. The course will equip you with tools not only to drive sustainability initiatives – but to embed innovation as a core agenda within your organization. You’ll work alongside peers and experts from across industries to sharpen your thinking and expand your perspective.

Through hands-on learning, masterclasses, panel discussions, excursions and peer collaboration, you will explore how to turn complex challenges into opportunities for growth and innovation.

If your ambition is to shape the future – not just react to it -this course will give you the insight, skills and network to lead the way.

Why this course is for you
If you want to position yourself as a strategic force within your organization, someone who drives both growth and sustainability, this course is for you.

You will deepen your leadership skills while gaining up-to-date insights into the technologies transforming industries. From breakthroughs in biotechnology, AI and machine learning to chemical engineering, biomanufacturing and data analytics, you will explore how these technologies are converging to build a new industrial era – one where sustainable solutions are not just possible, but often more cost-effective and profitable than petrochemical-based alternatives.

Through curated excursions, you will visit early-stage student ventures at DTU Skylab, cutting-edge deep-tech spinouts at DTU Science Park and privately backed life science accelerators. You will experience the entrepreneurial journey firsthand from the lab bench to the market. These live cases will help you envision new products, services and even entirely new business models for your own company.

I usually attend scientific conferences, but this course offered a unique balance between research, entrepreneurship, and industry that I have not experienced before

A novel approach to drive scientific leadership

We have developed a novel approach specifically for the senior specialist to drive scientific leadership.
The novel pedagogy for the ELPIS program consists of:

    • A science leadership mindset, rooted in the language of science, and promoting specific attitudes and mindsets, such as curiosity, questioning one’s assumptions, evidence-based rigor, combinatorial approaches, communicating the complex in simple terms, humor and optimism.
    • An opportunity creation process, reflected in the sequence of activities during each and across all modules, from uncovering industry or technology inflection points to generating provocative insights, turning insights into opportunities, calibrating and experimenting to refine the opportunities, and aligning opportunities with the innovation agenda,
    • A careful mix of activities to “walk the talk”, including keynotes and presentations, live cases, workshops, peer learning, networking events and exercises on influence/partnering, aiming to create or refine actual opportunities for your company.

We use an approach to the 4-day course with the main objective of carving out a landscape for opportunity creation for the participants.

Together, we aim to uncover relevant research and industry technology Inflection points in life sciences more broadly and biosolutions more specifically, and by generating provocative curiosity, inviting you to be open to uncovering unexpected insights through serendipity, we aim to provide you with new knowledge and ways of working with technology, innovation and leadership to take home to your company and industry.

By drawing inspiration from both state-of-the-art research at DTU, leading Danish and European decision makers, startups and industry leaders, and from engaging in peer and expert dialogue, we seek to chart out a specialist leadership pathway that will bring you insights to influence the innovation agenda in your expert field or domain.

During the 4-day programme we aim to provide a red thread to help you navigate your knowledge acquisition as well as your personal leadership journey. You will be expected to prepare for both group work and an individual presentation at the end of the course in the form of a short pitch and a PP outlining your key takeaways.

The course aims at providing you with as many live cases from both DTU research, startup environments and actual innovation cases from businesses as possible, which is why a full day of the program (Day 3) is dedicated to site visits with incubation environments of excellence  for university startup spinouts and talks by leading industries in Danish and international life science and biosolutions.

Day 1 Setting the Stage: Life Sciences as an opportunity field

Day 2 Becoming Engaged: Live cases as a set of Opportunities

Day 3 Becoming invested: Ecosystem Day and company cases

    Testimonials from participants January 2025:

The course inspires an entrepreneurial mindset

One of the participants in the pilot course is Fernanda Lopes, who leads a small team of researchers at AGC Biologics with a focus on innovation. Among other things, she is taking the course to develop her leadership skills, and since her background is more academic, she has especially benefitted from meeting entrepreneurs in biotech.

“I usually attend scientific conferences, but this course offered a unique balance between research, entrepreneurship, and industry that I have not experienced before. It was inspiring to visit DTU Skylab, Alfa Laval Innovation House, and the BioInnovation Institute, because you rarely get the opportunity to experience other people’s approach to innovation and what they do to support it”. says Fernanda Lopes.

Another participant in the course is Luis Marchal, Vice President Human Resources at Alfa Laval, where he oversees an innovation programme. He is also enthusiastic about the content of the course:

“I have gained a 360-degree view of life science from a business perspective. It was also an excellent mix of science and industry, and as a newcomer to Denmark, it has been refreshing to meet a lot of interesting people.”

Luis Marchal highlights the sharp focus on innovation and life science:

“I’m not a researcher, so it’s been super relevant for me to be introduced to a wide range of skills and technologies as part of this course.”

    What is the ELPIS programme?
The European Leadership Program for Industrial Scientists (ELPIS) is an executive education program developed by the EuroTeQ University Alliance partners.

The ELPIS programme introduces a unique approach to leadership for industrial science, blending interdisciplinary insights to identify growth opportunities at the intersection of key technologies like life sciences, advanced materials, photonics, and AI. It aims to help participants shape company strategies through research leadership while building a network of science and technology leaders across Europe.

ELPIS aim to address the challenges faced by European industries and companies, which are under pressure to remain competitive globally. To achieve this, companies need to identify the biggest opportunities for innovation through research in AI, biotech and photonics and effectively capture these opportunity- and innovation spaces. The DTU courses “Lead the bio-revolution across life science – how convergence of technologies can transform your business” and “ELPIS – Leading Industrial Science” are a part of the ELPIS programme.

    Programme design
The Programme consists of 5 modules each of 4 days length and are in-person and will be held on-site at the seven different universities in Europe.

The first module in the full program is “Leading Industrial Science”, which is followed by 3 technology modules of your own choice and finalized by a Capstone Project module.
