Overall Course Objectives

To achieve knowledge of the fundamental chemical principles, which are part of the common polytechnic foundation of the civil bachelor’s degrees

Learning Objectives

  • Discuss the Periodic Table and periodic variations in physical and chemical properties
  • State the electronic and geometric structure of atoms and molecules
  • Define and use enthalpy, entropy, and free energy in relation to chemical reactions
  • State conservation laws and stoichiometry
  • Recognize and describe the most important types of organic compound classes
  • Calculate kinetics and activation energies and explain catalysis
  • Calculate equilibrium constants and composition at chemical equilibrium
  • Calculate pH in solutions of strong and weak acid, bases and buffers
  • Calculate oxidation states and balance redox reactions

Course Content

Atoms and the periodic system. The chemical bond and the structures of molecules and crystals. Ionic solids, metals, polymers and phase transitions. Classification of materials in terms of the chemical bonding modes. Gasses, liquids and solids. Energy, entropy and chemical reactions. Chemical equilibrium. Kinetics of reactions and catalysis. Redox reactions and electrochemistry. Acid/base equilibria. Introduction to inorganic and organic chemistry including the chemistry of life.
