WAsP Engineering Self-study Online Course

This self-study course will teach you how to use the WAsP Engineering software for assessment of wind conditions affecting structural safety of wind turbines.

The course is organized as five modules with an expected workload of 7½ hours each and will include the following topics:

  • Site assessment
  • Linear flow models
  • Extreme winds
  • Turbulence
  • Case study

Study when you have the time
The course material and software license will be open for a period of 10 weeks. The expected workload is 37½ hours.

The first module introduces the IEC 61400-1 site assessment and the Windfarm Assessment Tool. The following modules present the three main models inside WAsP Engineering. In the final module, you will practice the new skilss in a case study, which you submit for evaluation and personal feedback. Each module includes lessons, quizzes, exercises, solutions, and a discussion forum.

Who is the course relevant for?

The course is for students, engineers, scientists and others – primarily working within the field of wind energy – who require a working knowledge of the WAsP software for wind resource assessment.

When and where?

This course is delivered on the DTU E-learning platform, and you work individually with the course material at your own pace. At the end of the course, you submit your final case study for evaluation and personal feedback.

There is no deadline for registration.

What is in it for you?

  • familiar with the theory behind WAsP Engineering,
  • aware of model limitations in WAsP Engineering.

  • prepare input for WAsP Engineering,
  • set up a WAsP Engineering project correctly,
  • predict extreme-wind speed, turbulence, and wind conditions at individual turbine sites,
  • perform a site assessment according to the IEC 61400-1 standard.

Practical information

  • Language: English
  • The course material and software license will be open for a period of 10 weeks. The expected workload is 37½ hours.
  • You will receive a free WAsP license, which will be valid throughout the ten week-course period, giving you access to the complete WAsP suite software.

There are specific tasks and assignments, which need to be completed in order to receive the Certificate of Participation at the end of the course, but you can go over the material as many times as you wish. Most importantly, you are asked to complete a case study and hand it in. It will be evaluated by a member of the WAsP Team at DTU Wind Energy and brief written feedback will be given.

Module 1 – IEC standards

This module presents the turbine classification and site assessment of the IEC 61400-1 turbine safety standard.

Module 2: Linear flow models

This module discusses linear flow models in general and presents LINCOM, the flow model of WAsP Engineering.

Module 3: Extreme winds

This module discusses extreme winds and how to predict them by WAsP Engineering.

Module 4: Turbulence

Module 5: Case study

In the final module, you practice everything you learned in a case study. You will submit your project for evaluation and receive a personal feedback report from a member of the WAsP Team.
