Sustainable Operations and Supply Chain Management (O&SCM)

Overall Course Objectives

The course encompasses the fundamental approaches to operations and supply chain management (O&SCM) based on a sustainability agenda encompassed in the UN sustainability goals. The course gives a broad overview of the fundamental concerns of O&SCM, unfolding the complexity of designing and managing complex operations within global supply chains.

Learning Objectives

  • Appraise reasons for sustainable operations and supply chain management (O&SCM), including the connection to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
  • Identify and compare design principles for sustainable product design
  • Define key concepts for sustainable production and Operations Management (OM)
  • Apply principles of lean management in the context of sustainability
  • Debate how services and servitization enable sustainability in manufacturing contexts
  • Describe core concepts of supply chain dynamics in the context of sustainability
  • Evaluate different approaches to sustainable procurement and supplier management
  • Assess core concepts of sustainable logistics management
  • Debate challenges and benefits of reverse supply chains in practice
  • Identify, select, assess, apply, and criticise relevant literature and data for a scientific issue and present a coherent argument

Course Content

The course covers different aspects of operations and supply chain management (O&SCM) in light of sustainability goals. The course consists of the following three parts (not equal):
1. Product design for sustainability
2. Sustainable production and operations management
3. Sustainable supply chain management

Moreover, the course will train and apply research methodology practices and tools relevant to MSc engineering students.

Recommended prerequisites

Participation in the course requires competences corresponding to the admission requirements for the MSc programme in Industrial Engineering and Management.
