Building renewal with focus on structures

Overall Course Objectives

Throughout the course, the student must acquire knowledge about Sustainable Building Renewal with emphasis on changing the building’s energy design, indoor climate, mechanical installations. In collaboration with students from the course 62281, the necessary changes to the building’s constructions are designed so that the building’s interior design and expected resource consumption meet current and future requirements for sustainable construction.

Learning Objectives

  • Assess and analyze an old building with a focus on the preparation of an action plan for how the building can be renovated to meet future functional requirements , energy requirements and sustainability requirements.
  • Proposal for a more contemporary space division with special emphasis on establishing wet rooms.
  • Proposal for an energy renovation of the building.
  • Proposal for the establishment of a recreational area on the roof or on terrain and new balconies with a focus on energy optimization, retention of rainwater and energy production.
  • Assess the fire technical conditions.
  • Design of necessary structural changes caused by new interior design and establishment of recreational area.
  • Design of repair due to fungus damages.
  • Design of necessary reinforcement of foundations.
  • Explain for the cooperation of the group.

Course Content

Buildings use up to 40% of Denmark’s total energy consumption. To meet the government’s and the EU’s goal of reducing the energy consumption of existing buildings by at least 50% by 2050, it requires massive investment in renovation projects.
At the same time, the buildings must be rebuilt to meet future requirements for Sustainable Construction.
In collaboration with course 62282, prepare a registrant and sustainability screening of the building, with associated project proposals, for the proposed changes to an older building with the following topics:
• Analysis of possible sustainable measures
• Registration and evaluation of mechanical installations and building constructions.
• Economic assessment of costs of rebuilding, maintenance and improvements.

A tender project is prepared for selected subject areas, for example:
• Design of necessary structural changes caused by new interior design and establishment of recreational area.
• Design of repair due to fungus damages.
• Design of necessary reinforcement of foundations.
